The frame of reference

Internal reference

Someone with the preference internal reference just knows they are doing a good job-they do not need someone else to tell them. People with a strong internal reference will never ask others for their views or feedback. If they do something wrong in a job or a project, they are able to recover quickly and set the problem to one side. They will just know and never ask for feedback.

External reference

Someone with the preference external reference finds it important to have regular communication with others during a Job or project. They speak in facts and figures. If someone strongly has this way of thinking, it is possible they very often ask questions about how they are doing and wants to know what others think. They need feedback.
